2019 SEAPAX Camp Out

The 2019 SEAPAX Camp Out is on Lopez Island at Spencer’s Spit State park!

We will be camping at a group site with limited space (25 people) and reservation is required. Campers are recommended to arrive on Friday afternoon (check-in is after 2:30 PM). Check out the Ferry schedule and make your reservations early! There will be a potluck on Saturday night. There are plenty of activities at this park including biking, kayaking, and park nature center. This event fee is $10 per person, which covers the cost of reservation for the park all 3 days. Parking is limited and carpooling is always recommended.

Activities: RPCV style Saturday night potluck, biking/kayaking, and beach walks

SEAPAX Open Board Positions
We are looking for a couple of motivated individuals to serve on our board. Please let us know if you would like to join our board as an Events Co-Chair or a Speakers’ Bureau Co-Chair. We are also looking for someone to serve as our Book Club Chair beginning in 2020 and someone to lead August's Book Club. If you want to learn more about any of these positions, email us.

Happy Hour

1st Wednesday HH: Join us next month on June 5th for the monthly Pub Quiz at Canterbury Ales in Cap Hill, 534 15th Ave E at 7 PM. Don't fear the quiz, show up for a good time.

Second Tuesday Arts & Cider: May 7th from 6-9 PM at Schillings Cider House in Fremont. Schillings does not have food, but you can bring your own. 708 N 34th St. Invite your friends and be kids again, just with an adult beverage.

3rd Wednesday HH: May 15th and we are heading Solo Bar for cocktails. 200 Roy St, Seattle.

Book Club

June's book on June 2nd is The Far Away Brothers: Two Young Migrants and the Making of an American Life by Lauren Markham. Location TBD, 3-5 PM.

We are looking for a volunteer to host the August meeting, you can pick the location. August's book on Aug. 4th from 3-5 PM is Then Again by Ben Berman. Email us.

SPRING INTO NETWORKING WITH SEAPAX

Join us for our 2019 Q2 SEAPAX Spring Into Networking event, on May 9th at 6 PM to bring together amazing RPCVs in the Seattle community to build quality connections and enjoy a brew (or two). The historic Belltwon Pub at 2322 1st Ave, Seattle has generously donated their private den for our networking event. Bring your business cards and resumes and get connected with talented career professionals from the RPCV community. Please RSVP.

Must be 21+ to attend, and all beverages are available for purchase by guests. Open to the SEAPAX community and friends, the more the merrier!

2019 Regional RPCV Camp Out

For all SEAPAX campers and adventurers, the 2019 Regional RPCV camp out details have been finalized. This is an annual event that is coordinated with five other regional RPCV associations (Southern Oregon RPCVs, Columbia River PCA, Idaho RPCVs, West Cascade PCA, and Inland Northwest PCA). This year’s camp out will be hosted by Southern Oregon RPCVs.

When: Thursday, Aug. 1^st – Sunday, Aug. 4^th
Where: Aspen Point Campground at Lake of the Woods in the beautiful Fremont-Winema National Forest (Klamath Falls, OR)
Costs: $15/adult for those staying at the group site. Kiddos under 18 are free!

Mt. Baker RPCV Potluck

Mt. Baker RPCV potluck will be Saturday, May 11 at 6 PM at a private home, 405 Hillcrest Way, Bellingham.

We don’t yet have a program speaker for the event. Please volunteer yourself or suggest someone who could give a 30-minute presentation on their Peace Corps service, or another topic of general interest to RPCVs.

Kindly RSVP by May 8 so we can ensure there are chairs for everyone. Remember your reusable plates, utensils, etc. to reduce landfill waste, and bring a casserole, salad, bread or dessert and something you like to drink.

Peace Corps Activities

Send Off / Welcome Home

We will be hosting our annual Peace Corps Send-Off and Welcome Home event for invitees and RPCVs at the Columbia City Library meeting room (bottom floor) on Monday, May 13, from 5:30pm-7:00pm. If you are available, please join us in celebrating with invitees, applicants, recently returned Peace Corps Volunteers, and not-so-recently returned Peace Corps Volunteers for a fun, informal evening with the Seattle Peace Corps community. This will be a light potluck event, so please bring an appetizer, dessert, non-alcoholic beverage, or light finger food to share. Email Seattle recruiter Matt Yoko-Young to RSVP for the event!

We are also seeking RPCV volunteers to staff approximately 6-8 country of service table spots to share information with attendees about your Peace Corps country of service during the first hour of the event. This will be an opportunity to share in an informal setting while attendees arrive and mingle. To sign up if you are interested, please email SEAPAX Board member Andrea Shelton.

Space is limited so please sign up early if you would like to staff a table. Note that we will be trying to represent as broad a spectrum of Peace Corps posts as is possible, so this will factor into the decision-making process. Andrea will confirm table space availability with you and provide you with additional info.

Capitol Hill PrideFest on June 29

Peace Corps will have a booth at the Capitol Hill PrideFest event on June 29 and we are looking for RPCVs to volunteer throughout the day! The event goes from 12 - 9 PM and we are looking for 2-4 RPCVs to staff the booth at any given time throughout the afternoon and evening. Please email Seattle recruiter Matt Yoko-Young at with a time slot(s) that you are available, if you are interested in helping out that day!

SEAPAX Speaker's Bureau

We are still looking for volunteers to support the Third Goal by joining the Speaker’s Bureau!

The revitalized Speaker’s Bureau program is asking for RPCVs who are interested in telling their story. This is no-cost and low-commitment. We will do the work of matching you to a school, university, or community group to speak to and you just need to come with a small slideshow of pictures and stories to share. We will provide the resources you need to make that happen!

Support the Documentary A Towering Task

Many of you have been aware of the ongoing production of the first feature documentary about the history of the Peace Corps. And now it is finally here! Soon it will be officially announced that A Towering Task will premiere in a gala event in DC on Sept. 22nd, and we want to be sure to have a Puget Sound premiere that can measure up!

We are looking for the perfect venue and one or more sponsors who will help us bring this urgent and important documentary to the Seattle area. We are asking all SEAPAX RPCVs to send us their ideas for a gala venue. In the next few months, the documentary is finishing production, and still looking for financial support from all of us, but we should start planning for a red carpet event. Let's make sure the story of the Peace Corps gets seen not just by our Peace Corps community, but by the whole Puget Sound community!

Please send all ideas to us and we will forward these to Alana DeJoseph, the film director.
